8M 2025, Researching in Equality

Gender equality in the field of research is a fundamental objective for building a fairer and more equitable society. Although significant progress has been made in recent decades, numerous challenges that hinder women and men from developing their research careers under equal conditions persist.

Historically, women have faced structural barriers that have limited their full participation in science. Despite the fact that today the number of women with doctorates is similar to that of men, their presence in leadership and decision-making positions remains in the minority. Glass ceilings, unconscious biases, and the lack of work-life balance continue to disproportionately affect female researchers.

At UPV/EHU, the Doctoral School (DOKe) is committed to promoting research in equality, aligned with the principles of the IV Plan for Equality between Women and Men 2024-2028. This commitment involves not only ensuring equal opportunities in access to research training but also actively working to eliminate barriers that impede the equitable development of scientific careers. In this regard, the DOKe team published an article in 2024 that provides data on the gender imbalance in the supervision of doctoral theses at our university.

To advance toward research in equality, it is essential to foster inclusive academic environments, promote work-life balance policies that benefit everyone, and highlight the role of women in science. The Doctoral School (DOKe) is committed to continuing to work in this direction, driving high-quality research training that is open to the world and based on values of equity and justice.

Researching in equality is not just a slogan; it is a shared responsibility that requires the effort of the entire university community. Only in this way can we build a future where talent, regardless of gender, is the engine of scientific and social progress.
