Title: The Quantum Way of Doing Computations, Simulations and Measurements
Speaker: Prof. Rainer Blatt (University of Innsbruck, IQOQI, AQT GmbH)
Abstract:
In this presentation, Prof. Blatt will review the foundational principles of quantum information processing and provide insights into the current status of the Innsbruck trapped-ion quantum computer. Using strings of trapped ions, his team implements a quantum information processor capable of quantum operations, simulations, and measurements. The talk will explore analog and digital quantum simulations, highlight applications in quantum metrology through entanglement-enhanced Ramsey interferometry, and address the implementation of fault-tolerant logical gates. Additionally, Prof. Blatt will discuss the development of a commercially available NISQ-type quantum processor through Alpine Quantum Technologies (AQT).
Short Bio:
Rainer Blatt is a professor of experimental physics at the University of Innsbruck and leads the Quantum Optics and Spectroscopy group. His research centers on quantum optics and information, using trapped ions to explore fundamental questions. He earned his PhD from the University of Mainz and conducted postdoctoral research at JILA with Nobel Laureate John Hall. Blatt has held academic positions across several German universities and, since 2003, has been the scientific director at the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information (IQOQI) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Blatt is a member of the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft and a Fellow of the APS. He is active in scientific advisory roles and outreach efforts. He has received numerous prestigious awards, including the Carl Zeiss Research Award, Stern-Gerlach Medal, John Stewart Bell Prize, Micius Quantum Prize, the Erwin Schrödinger Prize, and the 2023 Herbert Walther Award.
